hold the line

The act of communication involves the opening of an interval within oneself; a small space open to the reception of acceptable input. (There is, of course, unacceptable content involved as well, but this simply overflows, and is discarded without ever being scrutinized.) The process of reception is complex and layered, but what defines and drives it, is the fact of the interval, and the act of 'keeping open', the holding of the line.
